The openSUSE reference book documents the clasical boot system and system V extensively: an entire chapter. Alas, no mention of systemd.
And man pages aren't a nice read to learn things, very hard to read. No comparison with the SUSE docs. And they will not write the new chapter for several months.
(yes, there is a bugzilla about that, before anybody asks). On that note, I have a blog that is aggregated by the planet. I wanted to write an article on systemd. However, I frankly do not much understand it. ANd beyond that I want to show it in a positive light... the threads here have mostly been about why people think its horrible, and that wouldn't do anybody much good. So far the only thing I really understand about it is the aggressive parellelization for starting services leading ot a faster boot time. The rest is rather greek to me. ANd I have looked at some documetnation etc. but its not especially intelligible to me and doesn't give me any
