hi all !
I have decided to testcase Instlux (SUSE 10.3 alpha4) - setup from Windows.
A testcase that tested a possible situation in which I have got the DVD ISO of SUSE, have Windows XP, but have no CD-ROM drive. This situation can take place if the ISO was copied from friend's hard disk directly, but I have not bought DVD-RW to use that ISO properly. This case also simulates no network or Internet connectivity whatsoever. Offline setup.
The results:
Instlux itself worked perfectly, installed GRUB for Windows, SUSE kernel, and basic setup routine, and modified NTLDR.
The problems I got have to do with SUSE basic setup routine - it's loaded before Yast, and has insufficient functionality for easy setup of SUSE from Windows. "Basic Setup Routine" looks like Blue menu with several installation options.
1. How-to mount ISO (that resides on NTFS) from within SUSE setup?
That is: I found no way to mount the ISO that resides on an NTFS partition, so I used an ugly workaround: booted to Windows, used Nero ImageDrive, and copied the contents of the ISO to normal Windows directory.
A proper way would be that the "Basic Setup Routine" loop-mounted the ISO.
2. No ability to browse for files on partitions: the "Basic Setup Routine" gave me a way to enter strings, but that's all about it. Basically, if I don't remember my directories (or write down to paper), I have no way to install SUSE from Windows.
the "Basic Setup Routine" should offer me a way to browse on my directories.
3. No ability to format /dev/sdX as swap and use it right away. I needed to either increase RAM or boot into rescue system and do tricks... (manually partition and format as swap) Since I was testing on a VM, I just increased the RAM. But that's ugly solution again.
the "Basic Setup Routine" should offer me a way to repartition my hard disk, and use one of those partitions as swap.
Note: the above are serious usability issues, and I consider to open bug reports. Which category should I assign to those: Installation or Usability ?

Hello !? Novell team asked for testing this "Instlux" feature - so why there are zero responses ? -- -Alexey Eremenko "Technologov" --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
