cron - trying to find if btrfsmaintenance is actually running.
looked in the journal -> no mention of the cron job starting,
I see cron jobs starting and finishing in the log: <10.6> 2017-02-28 19:00:01 minas-tirith cron 7514 - - pam_unix(crond:session): session opened for user root by (uid=0) <3.6> 2017-02-28 19:00:01 minas-tirith systemd 1 - - Created slice User Slice of root. <3.6> 2017-02-28 19:00:01 minas-tirith systemd 1 - - Starting User Manager for UID 0... <3.6> 2017-02-28 19:00:01 minas-tirith systemd 1 - - Started Session 14 of user root. <10.6> 2017-02-28 19:00:01 minas-tirith systemd - - - pam_unix(systemd-user:session): session opened for user root by (uid=0) <3.6> 2017-02-28 19:00:01 minas-tirith systemd 1 - - Started User Manager for UID 0. <10.6> 2017-02-28 19:00:01 minas-tirith CRON 7514 - - pam_unix(crond:session): session closed for user root <3.6> 2017-02-28 19:00:01 minas-tirith systemd 1 - - Stopping User Manager for UID 0... If you don't see more, is because the creator of the cron job does not want you to see it.
no mention of btrfsmaintenance, no mention of balance, i finally nailed it by searching on the activity that balance invokes "relocating block group". If i have missed something let me know, otherwise this is not how a good interface should work.
seems to me cron operates on a "script and pray" principle
I will not try to convince you of using cron. Just don't try to convince me to use timers, either. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R.
