As the OP I think the base issue is the DVD lacks *branding-upstream*, and that *branding-openSUSE* ties X things into things unrelated to runlevel 5/X. I can't remember ever having this degree of trouble eradicating GUI elements from runlevels 1-3 when doing net installs.
Don't conflate this to include GFXboot WRT me, as GFXboot makes everything big enough and pleasant enough to use that that it is GUI is not a problem for me. The M$-style obfuscated init process, and the repeated package updating and and disk space it requires, is all I was trying to prevent encountering and resulted in this thread.
