Our samba guys are really good in doing the things you want, e.g. samba 3.6.6 lives in network:samba:STABLE buildservice project ready for use.
If I need it I know where it is. Been using SuSE since the 5.x days. Built a few packages that I needed. But I don't demand or make silly statements about how things are going. Personally I think she'd be better off with Gentoo or Arch. Then she can build to her heart's content.
