[opensuse-factory] to tmp-on-tmpfs or not tmp-on-tmpfs

I'd like to make a summary of the discussion (and add my thoughts, I've been running with my /tmp in tmpfs on several systems for years). To get something out of the way: if you run your DESKTOP system more than a week or two, expect /tmp to grow BIG. 2 GB is nothing in my experience. Thumbnailers sometimes leave data behind and so do things like flash, web browsers, inkscape, transcoding apps, CD Burners, some compiles ... This might be due to apps misbehaving but we're not Fedora, we handle the world as it is - not as it should be. Limiting the size like Debian does (max 50% of ram for all tmpfs'es) is a posibility, but then it gets full. And then? Random crashes, apps refusing to start, horrible slow performance due to memory running full. Can we add swap? That is slow. Not just that, by the time the OOM killer finally decides to kill something in your trashing system, it has been frozen for an hour if you're lucky. Besides, if it fills up swap you can't hibernate anymore. So downside of tmp on tmpfs: we introduce the notion of "have you tried turning it on and off again?" that MS is just about to do away with (or so they claim). Upside of this feature (from Fedora page): a few saved hard disk cycles and theoretical power savings, most likely quickly outdone by the increased swap usage. Oh, and we get closer to Solaris, which has been doing this forever. Yay. The verdict is simple: we can't follow upstream in this or other distro's in this. It doesn't work for us. Debian wants to build an OS for systemadmins. They have to tweak the system for their usecase anyway. And this is fine for servers, I bet. Fedora wants people to test the latest and greatest Linux has to offer. Their users are not supposed to run a desktop/laptop system for a month without upgrading to new unstable things and rebooting. But openSUSE wants to build an OS for people who need to get work done, not fiddle with system internals if they don't have to. Graphics designers, netbook owners, VM-users, DVD-burning users, flash-users, pdf-viewing people, web-browsing-users - they all can't work with this... I think we should pick a sensible default: put stuff which doesn't have to be in memory, on the disk. Keep the system performant for common usecases. Those who want their /tmp on tmpfs can use fstab. If, on one sunny day, the world has been turned around and all apps clean up after themselves or abuse /var/tmp for the data which wasn't supposed to be kept over boot (or, in an extremely green/pink world, use the proper locations like mentioned in Lennarts' blog on this subject), we can re- consider. And maybe we find other solutions to the problems mentioned - like cleaning up /tmp once it is getting full or stuff like that. But for now - let's keep /tmp on disk for at least one more release... /Jos * note how I did NOT abuse Lennart Poettering in any way. There is a very much negative review of udisks2 http://igurublog.wordpress.com/2012/03/11/udisks2-another-loss-for-linux/ which claims that udisks2 is a Gnome-specific tool and will render many applications incompatible until rewritten. If this is true I would very much oppose including udisks2 in openSUSE without a thorough preparation. What do you think about this? Note: it costed a much effort to adapt KDE3 to udisks instead of hal but for now it heavily depends on udisks1 functionality. I suspect porting to udisks2 will again need a rewrite. [opensuse-factory] Call for testing: New factory glibc

I have a new glibc that contains fixes for two problems that have biten a few of you: * crashes in chromium or ktorrent if nscd is not running (or unscd is used) (bnc#741021) * Fix crash in KDE while starting glibc (bnc#753251). For the second bug I have confirmation that it's fixed on x86 but it might be that x86-64 contains another bug. Since the fix for the KDE crash involved removing another patch (and adding a couple of backports) and that patch fixed a rather large showstopper for openSUSE 11.4 (the missing symbols in KDE and subversion - bnc#657627), I'm doing a call for testing: If you're hit by either of the bugs, please test the new glibc from: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/a_jaeger:/my-factory-packag… Also, testing by others is welcome to be sure that the glibc does not introduce new bugs like the 11.4 showstopper. [opensuse-factory] Warning / ANNOUNCE : upcoming changes in upstream systemd regarding /media, /tmp and /var/run | /var/lock

Hi all, this is a announcement regarding changes which have just landed in upstream systemd (not yet released nor pushed to Factory) regarding /media and /tmp: - /media will no longer mounted as tmpfs. This is because udisks2 will no longer use /media for mounting removables devices but /run/media/<user> - /var/run and /var/lock are no longer bind-mounted to /run | /run/lock. We should replace those directories with symlink to /run | /run/lock (probably at initrd time, this is what is done on Fedora) - /tmp is mounted as tmpfs, to make the default setups as stateless as possible. As stated on https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Features/tmp-on-tmpfs , we might need to fix some applications to use /var/tmp instead of /tmp when they need persistent storage. [opensuse-factory] Default installation of M2 freezes when searching for linux partitions

Hello all, I've been experiencing a problem with the installer on 12.2 M1 and M2. When I select the default kernel for install. The installation freezes when searching for Linux partitions. If I select the setting with "NO ACPI" the installation no longer freezes when searching for Linux partitions. Is this a known problem? Cheers! [opensuse-factory] How to confirm the licenses?

Recently a bug report has been filled by the legal team regarding two sound files in KDE3' kdeartwork package: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=754072 My further investigation showed that the same files included not only in KDE3 but also in KDE4, where all the sub packages of kdeartwork were tagged with the following "license": No license agreement found in package ; GPLv2+, LGPLv2+, LGPLv3, BSD3 aggregation Thus I wonder why the bugreport was filled only against KDE3, and not against KDE4 where not only these files, but all subpackages of kdeartwork are affected. Anyway I e-mailed to the files author and he said that nobody asked him for a license when he contributed this to KDE svn, but he can release the files under CC-BY-SA. jack-1.9.8 x86_64 build in Factory started at Tue Mar 27 07:33:24 UTC 2012.and has been stuck since then. Can somebody please restart the build. Unfortunately this is going to start a frenzy of multimedia x86_64 packages rebuilding. [opensuse-factory] Is it systemd or something else - part 2: tmp directory not being cleared

What IS going on? I have set cron in /etc/sysconfig to delete what is in the /tmp directory at each boot. Earlier I looked and /tmp is full of 'rubbish'. I checked the setting in cron and it was OK. So I had to manually go thru the process of clearing out /tmp. So what gives? This did not happen in the past. I am using Milestone #2 of 12.2, BTW. Anyone offer a suggestion about the above please?
