[opensuse-factory] RFC: use case for USB image (fate#305658)

Hi, It has been my goal to support the LiveCD ISO also on a USB and let it make the changes you do in ~linux store persistently on the USB stick (so you can e.g. try easily the same thing on different computers). Now I got my first bug report claiming this is not wanted and should only be done if explicitly asked for. Now it's me against the user and I can of course easily close WONTFIX, but I wonder what others thing: what is the use case of storing the live cd on a USB stick? Give me some background: The ISO is a .iso meant to be written on a optical disc (CD-R,CD-RW,DVD-R,DVD-RW). There the file system will be purely readonly and all changes end up in memory. But as newer syslinux can boot ISOs also from hard drives, there is a new option: put the .iso file raw on a usb stick - overwriting the partition table, losing all data. So you would have 700MB on a 4G stick, there is the question why you would want to store things in memory if you have plenty of room on the stick. And then there is a 3rd option: copy the _content_ of the .iso into an existant vfat file system and create a vfat mbr (using syslinux). There the changes would end up as additional file in the vfat and may take up some room that you might want for other things. In both cases the changes to the ISO will be an additional file (named copy- on-write - .cow) that is easy to erase if you want to start from scratch. The bug in question is #498311. [opensuse-factory] VirtualBox problem when run as root

Same problem on factory with 2.1.4 and 2.2.0 on 11.2 Alpha0. Running VirtualBox as root on any box, it gets stuck at "futex(0x69bbcc, FUTEX_WAIT_PRIVATE, 1, NULL" as seen with "strace -s 256 -f VirtualBox". If I "ssh -X" in as root from another box, VirtualBox works fine, but locally as root on either box, doesn't work - works fine as user. Bug #487060 submitted 2009-03-19 19:20 MDT, but no response so far. I have seen the same problem with qjackctl which also runs OK as user. Some stuff just won't run as root because of the FUTEX_WAIT_PRIVATE problem. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce ... [opensuse-factory] First impressions of 11.2

I just installed the 11.2 Milestone 1 DVD on my test system, an ancient Compaq Presario 2110US with 512 MB of RAM and a 1.6 GHz Athlon XP. First impressions: 1. The Synaptics Touchpad wasn't active on the DVD boot. I had to plug in a USB mouse or use ALT-<letter> commands to navigate the install menu. 2. After that, the install was fine. The only other comment I have, and this is common to earlier openSUSE installs as well, is that I haven't been able to set the host name during the install. It's not terribly obvious how to set it *after* the install, either. Have I missed something obvious, or does openSUSE not have a place to set the host name during an install? 3. The system, like 11.1, comes up with Beagle installed and running. This kills my 512 MB machine and I end up de-installing it as soon as I can. It can be disabled on a DVD or network install, but as far as I can tell it can't be disabled on an install from a LiveCD. Any chance of making the Beagle install optional in all cases? Other than that, everything looks good. I may put another hard drive in my workstation and dual-boot it with 11.2 just so I can hack on the stuff I really want to hack on -- cloud / virtualization. :) -- M. [opensuse-factory] Milestone 1 in Virtualbox

Hello, is 11.2 Milestone 1 supposed to work in Virtualbox? When rebooting the installed system, I get a Kernel panic. (I do not know how to copy the error messages from the Virtualbox screen, so before trying, I would first like to know whether it is not a known bug.) [opensuse-factory] RFC: what to put on the live cds

Hi, You may have noticed or may be not, but I've experimented a bit with the factory live cds. While the 11.1 livecds used some combination of squashfs+aufs, the factory live cds use some new, experimental file system with the working title "doenerfs", which embeds an ext3 image. As this uses lzma compression, the size went from ~680MB to ~570MB for a GNOME live cd@ i586. Now I had several requests in the past to add additional software that I had to refuse because there just wasn't enough room on the CD (and I need to extra MB as buffer because with compression the size required can jump quite considerable from build to build). So I ask: what do you think I should add. Open requests are basically everything installed by the DVD and is not from the CD. This includes e.g.: - gimp - java runtime - beagle - the complete printing locally stack (e.g. drivers, filters) - 4 more text editors - 3 more shells And there is the request to include more languages on the livecd. This is actually my preferred solution - as I see the live cd use case (smaller download) more visible in countries that speak languages other languages than german and english. If you look at http://en.opensuse.org/Statistics, this would mean: russian, italian, spanish, spanish, polish, french (as it fits). Of course a third option is: leaving the live cd at 570MB for smaller download (and/or more free space on a USB stick). I have 11.2 upgraded from 11.1. I have set "donn" with audio in /etc/groups. Amarok indicates it is playing on its bar graph. Call up "kmix" or "gamix" and no slide knobs are seen on either. Yast2 >hardware> sound test shows that the soud works. Goto KDE4 and the sound fails. As far as I know under 11.1 (it worked) and a upgrqde to 11.2 it fails. [opensuse-factory] RFC: create multimedia:libs and move media libs and GStreamer primary Factory development

Hallo. It would be nice to have a central place for multimedia libraries and codecs. Nowadays they are spread over many home:*:Factory projects. GStreamer primary development project is even GNOME:Factory and it is frozen in GNOME:STABLE:*, even if it has nothing to do with GNOME release cycle. It means that it's hard to upgrade multimedia stuff like GStreamer on released products and even test new libraries. That is why I would like to propose new repository: multimedia:libs This repository should contain latest version of multimedia libraries and codecs. It should be preferred Factory devel project for this type of packages. It is not intended for multimedia applications. It should be built for released products, so other projects can easily resource it if appropriate. I volunteer to start with my packages and GStreamer. [opensuse-factory] checkinstall strangeness

May require submitting a bug. Building a RPM package from a tarball will quite often include stuff that's already installed, e.g:- I have to give checkinstall options such as --exclude /lib64/,/usr/bin/gcc,/usr/lib64/gcc/,/lib64/crti.o,/lib64/crtn.o and others when I discover with "rpm -qpl xxxx.rpm" that they are included in the package. Has anyone else noticed this as it has been so for a very long time. Noting that every problem I have posted to this list in recent months has been met with silence, suggesting that most people install the distro and simply run with it as is - see if my luck changes this time. Packages such as jack are still at 0.109 while the latest 0.116.2 is needed for certain apps like dttsp to work correctly. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce ...
