Best way to share a printer on a SAMBA network of Win98 machines????? 1. Attached to an old 486 (or whatever) running as a dedicated Linux box 2. Shared from one of the networked Win98 machines 3. Any other ideas? James Carter

1. Attached to an old 486 (or whatever) running as a dedicated Linux box
That'll work, assuming the printer is supported by Ghostscript. I presume you'd be reasonably familiar with your printer configuration tool of choice.
2. Shared from one of the networked Win98 machines
That'll work too. As long as the machine is turned on and not crashed ;-)
3. Any other ideas?
HP Jetdirect card, or equivalent. Put the printer directly on the network, and don't go through slooowwww parallel ports. And don't go for a network->parallel port adapter. The Win98 machines might be slightly faster, but probably because they're Pentium-somethings with enhanced parallel ports, whereas the 486 would creak along with a "standard" parallel port.
