1. Attached to an old 486 (or whatever) running as a dedicated Linux box That'll work, assuming the printer is supported by Ghostscript. I presume you'd be reasonably familiar with your printer configuration tool of choice.
If you are only printing from windows, you could also configure a 'raw' printing device, and install the printer drivers on windows as usual. This way you get all the usual bells and wistles at the Windows end, and Linux does nothing but pass anything it gets over the network on to the printer. Linux does not need to support the printer at all in this case. I think you can get Samba to 'serve up' the printer driver to the Windows boxes too - making management of updates/etc easier - but have not done this myself ... Kevin.
