Just to draw attention to small linux www.superant.com/smalllinux Looks interesting, According to linux format they are working on a 3 disk version, which would be useful for me as my old 486dx2 66 does not have a cdrom at present. networking is included so it should be ok as a Xterminal. The distro should work on a 486 with 8mb memory. Hope this helps. Paul

Linux in Primary Schools

I'm a Primary ICT Co-ordinator. I support a handful of schools for which I have installed a Linux file server, and proxy server. It works like a dream. I strugled with a heap of old machines to set up thin clients. It blew out my Easter break. I feel that perhaps buying thin client workstations is the way to go about this, not to use an eclectic mix of old machines (unless you have the time to invest in sorting them). Primary schools CAN do most of the curriculum with productivity software. StarOffice will cover a lot. You will need to run it remotely if you are using older machines. It grinds to a halt if your workstation is light on RAM (it needs 64mb really). But, there are holes. Multimedia educational stuff is bigger in KS1, and the folk down there do love it. I push the Core applications as much as I can, but they do need a few other bits too. Just my two cents. This advert appeared in the Llanelli Star / South wales Evening Post last week, and in the Carmarthen Journal this week. If you are interested I would suggest that you contact Coedcae School, express your interest and request an extension to the deadline for application form completion. I don't believe they've had many applications yet so some more would be most pleasing. As far as I cen remember (and don't quote me on this) Scale 3 is approx. 10.5K to 12K at top of scale. Both ourselves and Coedcae use Linux but in different ways. We (Bryngwyn) use it asd an Intranet server, but also as an NFS and NIS server for certain desktops within the school. At Bryngwyn we use Windows, Linux and MacOS - we need Linux to link these together.... Linux for primary children?

Hi, I've been following this list for a while, trying to get a feel for the type of list - it seems quite technical, so apologies if it is out of list policy. We're a small primary school who are just about to start work on a new ICT suite. The funding at the moment only covers building and furniture, not hardware or software. This is really a plea for information/experiences that schools have had with implementing Linux as an operating system - do schools use it solely as a server, or as workstations with server (thin-client)? What setup do schools have, and what software did they opt for? What is the range of software available for Linux for primary children (I've looked at Fensystems.co.uk and at the moment am a bit disappointed) - will it meet the curriculum requirements for KS1 and KS2? Is it easier to run a Linux server with Windows workstations? I apologise for the general questions, but we are in the early stages and trying to weigh up all options and are trying to gather information from schools who have gone down this road before us. Another OS problem

Hi folks, Shouldn't really post this one here, I suppose! A governor's Win98 installation insists that and ISDN device should be loaded every time the machine starts. She hasn't got anything like ISDN anywhere and the hardware inventory for her machine doesn't help. Any ideas how it can lose this error without losing the whole OS (which was my suggestion!). Hauppage WinTV cards

Hi, I wonder if anyone has a recommendation as to which card is good to use and perhaps a preferred supplier in the UK?
