Fen Systems' package of Cygwin/XFree86 (software that allows you to use a Windows machine as an X terminal to run applications on a Linux application server) is currently available from: http://osie.sourceforge.net/CygXF86.zip The old location (http://www.fensystems.co.uk/CygXF86.zip) is temporarily unavailable, as we appear to be experiencing data corruption problems at the company hosting our web site. Proprietary Formats for documents posted of the DFEE website

Hi all, Would anybody out there like an excuse to make a point to the Government? I have been asked to download the Threshold Application packs from the DFEE website for various members of staff at this school. To my annoyance I find that the pack is only available in Word Format! (URL is given below). http://www.dfes.gov.uk/teachingreforms/rewards/perfthresh/applications_wale… I consider such behaviour from the government unacceptable. simple copy question

Ok, why when I type cp /home/trial/USER.MAN /home/*/ does it reply: omitting /home/trial2 omitting /home/trial3 I want to copy the files to all directories under home. How to Identify suspect IP address

Not strictly a linux question, but does anyone know how to identify a suspect IP address in the web server logs. In other words is there a web site where I can enter the IP address and find out which ISP that address belongs to? We had this with SAMBA after upgrading to SuSE 7.2, and persisted while the tweaking and tuning was happening. The problem seems to be when SuseConfig runs (but only sometimes), and some daemons are stopped but never restarted. After a while, and when the changes were all done, the problem simply went away. If you're tweaking, this /might/ be the problem. We aren't running DNS (yet), so I can't comment there. Hi Andrew, Sorry for the delay in answering. Basically, you need to do two steps to get this working. Firstly, you need to set up VNC to work with inetd/xinetd. If you've got inetd then you need to edit two files, adding the following. /etc/services: vnc-640x480x8 5950/tcp # VNC server at 640 x 480 8 bit colour /etc/inetd.conf: (all one line) vnc-640x480x8 stream tcp nowait nobody /usr/local/bin/Xvnc Xvnc -inetd -query dcomp2 -once -geometry 640x480 -depth 8 or if you have xinetd, create the file /etc/xinetd.d/vnc: service vnc-640x480x8 { flags = REUSE socket_type = stream protocol = tcp port = 5950 wait = no user = nobody server = /usr/bin/Xvnc server_args = -inetd -query hostname -once -geometry 640x480 -depth 8 log_on_failure += USERID disable = no } Then restart inetd/xinetd. Obviously, you would replace hostname with your hostname. This then lets you connect to your Linux box using to 'hostname:50' and have inetd start up a VNC server for you. If you do this, you will see the normal gray background, because you have not configured your xdm to respond to remote requests. To do this, you need to edit some files in /etc/X11/xdm. In the file xdm-confug, below the line: DisplayManager._0.setup: /etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup_0 add the line: DisplayManager.*.setup: /etc/X11/xdm/Xsetup_workstation and then uncomment the line: DisplayManager.requestPort: 0 Then copy Xsetup_0 to Xsetup_workstation. In the file Xaccess, uncomment the line: * #any host can get a login window Then, reset X - I do it by switching to runlevel 3 and then back to 5: init 3 (pause) init 5 You should now be able to connect using hostname:50 and see a xdm/kdm/gdm logon whichevery your box is configured to use. Personally, I've set up a few services, using ports 5950 5951 5952 etc, to provide different resolutions and colour depths. For example I use gary:52 to connect at 1024x768 depth 24. Something similar happens to me, again on 7.1 I can see Samba on the startup screen during boot, but after I log in it's not there. I can start it manually and it runs thereafter. Ditto NWserv. This is only the case *sometimes*. Both run happily when started manually, and both work fine from boot on a Redhat machine. I am having problems with my DNS. On a server running SuSE 7.1 the DNS daemon (named 8.2.3) aborts leaving no trace that I can find in the logs. It is not a problem to restart and then runs perfectly again. It has happened several times now with no apparent trigger or pattern. The config files for about 15 domains worked fine for over a year under SuSE 6.4 and were transferred directly to the new system.
