[Bug 773495] New: Rescue mode for fixing grub1 and grub2 is not user-friendly
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=773495 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=773495#c0 Summary: Rescue mode for fixing grub1 and grub2 is not user-friendly Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 12.2 Version: RC 1 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 12.2 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Usability AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: rb03884@gmail.com QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: Beta-Customer Blocker: --- I have noticed that the rescue mode is not user friendly at all. What would happen if you had to reinstall a distro on another partition that used Grub1? You would loose Grub2 for 12.2. Yes? A lot of users whether newbies or intermediate are going to have a problem recovering Grub2. The help is NOT helpful at all. I remember back in the 11.x series, a gui "repair your system" was in place. Can you please add a script feature so that the Yast Boot Loader can be started to recover Grub. And, if possible run fsck? This applies to Grub1 and Grub2. It would be a life saver. Yes? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It depends on how you install them and yes you would lost them. For sure you should install to boot sector and in new installed grub1 you chainload the bootsector and in turn it loads grub2 (but you have to manually add the config).
A lot of users whether newbies or intermediate are going to have a problem recovering Grub2. The help is NOT helpful at all.
It seems to me that grub2-setup (grub2-bios-setup) is enough to re-install your grub2 to the location, and chroot is not required. (but you have to mount the /boot partition you want rescue and specify locations of the core.img and boot.img to it). But if your rescure case is more complicated, you may have to run grub2 utilities in chrooted system which is being rescued ..
I remember back in the 11.x series, a gui "repair your system" was in place. Can you please add a script feature so that the Yast Boot Loader can be started to recover Grub. And, if possible run fsck?
Sorry I'm not aware of that gui (I always boot to rescue mode and try to fix things in command line), thus I need to take a look and understand it.
This applies to Grub1 and Grub2. It would be a life saver. Yes?
If we have done that before and you think it helpful, we should try to bring it back. Since now I'm not know how it works at all(and what scenarios it could support and limitations ..etc), I need some time to investigate how to work on it. And sorry I may have other high priority bugs interrupted so it may take some time .. Do you have any idea why "repair your system" was not is 12.x systems anymore? I think it must have a reason being dropped. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
