I also did some further testing, with somehow strange results. The brightness is (correctly) set to a middle value if the battery is used and otherwise to the maximum. (In 10.3 the level of brightness is not displayed if I change it via hotkeys.) So I looked,if powersave has some influence. In powersave in scheme_performance the brightness is set to max and in scheme_powersave it is set to med. OK, but these values also have to influence on the brightness if I change them, or stop powersave. I do not know of any other process which could trigger the brightness in the way above described. You mean if you load the video module /sys/class/backlight is also empty? Are you sure it worked in 10.2 via KPowersave? Could you provide lshal from a 10.2 installation?

I am not absolutly sure that it worked with the latest updates of kpowersave, but before I reported the bug I checked with the 10.2 Live-DVD. As far as I know, it now does no longer needs a list of supported devices but does detect supported machines automatically. Secondly, there were reports for 10.3 regarding the Samsung P35 which -- if I recall correctly -- reported the brightness handling to work fine. I have to dig a little deeper in order to find the corresponding report(s). Third, this bug might have something in common with bug #304162 . It is about broken brightness events for ASUS laptops. Danny, the Samsung P35 historically was always supported by the ASUS ACPI driver -- don't ask why ;-) It just happened to have the same ACPI implementation as ASUS laptops. Doing "modprobe -r asus_laptop" and "modprobe asus_acpi" results in working brightness support. Nevertheless if the brightness is changed either by hotkey or due to another schema in kpowersave the brightness starts to flicker. I will investigate further if I find the time. So it does not really help. But thanks again for your help.
