https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=684634 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=684634#c0 Summary: System freezes repeatedly, randomly under openSUSE 11.4/KDE Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.4 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: don.smith@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Other Blocker: --- I have experienced random system freezes after installing openSUSE 11.4 on my Lenovo Thinkpad W510. The entire desktop locks: the mouse pointer will move, but the desktop is unresponsive to clicks or keyboard input. All applications, and KDE itself, are frozen. The only option is powering down the laptop and restarting, which has caused data corruption in a few of my applications. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Don't sysrqs work?
The only option is powering down the laptop and restarting, which has caused data corruption in a few of my applications.
How can hard reboot cause data corruption with journaling filesystems? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I'm afraid that no promises can be made when such issues will get fixed as nouveau is purely a reverse engineering effort with no support at all from the NVIDIA side while GPUs are rather complicated beasts. [...]
But you can also use packages from home:jobermayr [esp. drm-nouveau kernel package] which contain latest graphics drivers to see whether such issues are already fixed compared to the ~ 4-6 months old driver stack used in openSUSE 11.4 ... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

--- Comment #17 from Johannes Obermayr
Johannes, what's different between your home project and X11:XOrg? If none, we should probably be suggesting using the official project. If there are differences, why are there?
Daily updates to current git (kernel stack(s), libdrm, Mesa (debug build), DDX drivers, some development tools, ...) which (of course) X11:XOrg does not provide since (of course again) openSUSE is not a so bleeding edge distribution. See for example: bug # 663745 But you as a openSUSE kernel developer should know it better than me ... So maintainers must not wonder if people have "fixed" problems on openSUSE ... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
