Actually I'm using Arch Linux. But anyway, hwinfo crashes because of a syscall to syslog. It passes a buffer size of 0x2000 but actually 0x2048 chars got written (in my case), overwriting the stack sentinel. It seems that it's a kernel bug related to some recent changes in kernel/printk.c. I found this: http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git;a=commit;h=e375... I guess that might fix it, but I haven't tested it yet. That's in the mainline kernel; I'm running stable 3.5.3. In the hope that it's useful... If you do a dmesg -C, hwinfo should work after that (it does for me). That command clears the ring buffer, so there's no way reading it can cause the stack overwrite. Only problem is that nukes your dmesg output for you current session so dmesg > a_file first if you need it.
