[Bug 460729] New: non working nvidia drivers (free and non-free) result in having to use vesa
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=460729 Summary: non working nvidia drivers (free and non-free) result in having to use vesa Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: sndirsch@novell.com ReportedBy: jnelson-suse@jamponi.net QAContact: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: --- With 11.0 I had a problem with the nv (xorg) driver which resulted in a blank screen from which I could not recover. A possibly-related xorg bug itself goes back to 2007-10-01: http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12637 But more likely: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17049 and the original opensuse bug I filed: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=416044 This is still an issue, however, with opensuse 11.1 the binary nvidia drivers don't work for me (yet) so I'm really stuck with vesa or I have to restore the computer to 11.0 (not fun). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

What do you mean with that? Driver RPMs are available, so what's the issue? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

From the SaX.log attached to that bug, the hardware is:
(--) PCI:*(1:0:0) nVidia Corporation Quadro FX 570M rev 161, Mem @ 0xd6000000/24, 0xe0000000/28, 0xd4000000/25, I/O @ 0x2000/7 I'll be attaching the Xorg.0.log for the **nv** driver shortly. I can't get an Xorg log with the G01 drivers because the kernel module refuses to load. I'll try to get one with the G02 driver, for which the kernel module loads but I get an xorg error. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Created an attachment (id=261405) --> (https://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=261405) [details] Xorg.0.log for the **nv** driver
[...] (==) NV(0): Backing store disabled (==) NV(0): Silken mouse enabled (**) Option "dpms" (**) NV(0): DPMS enabled This indeed looks truncated, which confirms that you get a machine freeze here. I suggest to report this issue upstream on bugs.freedesktop.org, since NVIDIA is developing the nv driver and only NVIDIA has the required information to fix it. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

So. Pending issues:
1. the weird interaction with interactive boot scripts
Didn't understand at all what you've meant with interactive boot.
2. the *slow* restart of X.
Right. Known issue. Must be resolved by NVIDIA. Please report to directly to them. SUSE/Novell cannot fix that issue.
I hope to get the nv driver working someday, it's not worked since 10.3 for >me. :-(
As said before, please report upstream on bugs.freedesktop.org. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

From /etc/sysconfig/boot
# # For interactive debugging of the startup process. If set # to "yes" the system will ask whether to confirm every # step of the boot process. This will however only work # if the keyboard is already accessable at this time, # eg. USB keyboards need their modules loaded first. # PROMPT_FOR_CONFIRM="no" PROMPT_FOR_CONFIRM="yes" -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
