https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=673944 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=673944#c0 Summary: Laptop Temperature's Becoming Heat and Slower in Performance after Making Mobile Broadband Connection Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Factory Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: andi@opensuse-id.org QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=415467) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=415467) 'lsusb -v' output of the USB 3G-Modem User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:2.0b11) Gecko/20110203 Firefox/4.0b11 It's been discussed in Factory-list[0], and needed some more valuable advice how to solve the issue. [0] http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2011-02/msg00567.html It is becoming heat and getting slower after making 'mobile broadband connection' (by wvdial, at this time plasmoid-networkmanagement failed to dial) $ uname -r 2.6.37-22-desktop $ cat /etc/SuSE-release openSUSE 11.4 RC 1 (x86_64) VERSION = 11.4 CODENAME = Celadon The attachment are the result of 'lsusb -v', actual log (/var/log/messages) and the screenshot* when it happened. *) https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/L3ublkFlIO1ZUDTqVpxD0Q?feat=directlink Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Plug the USB 3G-Modem 2. Make some proper configurations 3. Run the 'Mobile Broadband Connection' (by wvdial) Actual Results: $ cat /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp 88000 and powertop's output shows the high value 'avg residency', making the performance gets slower. Expected Results: Lower temperature, and reasonable performance. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

There is something spinning in kworker. After you connect (and this happens), could you: * turn off syslog * dmesg -c > /tmp/log * for aa in 1 2 3 4 5; do echo t >/proc/sysrq-trigger dmesg -c |grep -A 50 kworker >>/tmp/log echo +++ >>/tmp/log done * attach /tmp/log here ? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

By doing this: su -c 'killall -9 rsyslogd' ? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Yeah, it's just not to spam your logs with the traces... Unfortunately the traces show no activity of kworker unlike the powertop screenshot. When you run htop or top, what is the busy process spinning with the CPU? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

That is why it looks strange, there is no process that consume extremely CPU resource. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

cat /etc/SuSE-release openSUSE 11.4 (x86_64) VERSION = 11.4 CODENAME = Celadon
uname -r 3.0.0-rc3-256-gde505e7-1-vanilla
I will try it on official openSUSE 11.4 kernel (2.6.37.6-0.5.1) to see whether it does the same or not in identical situation (battery and AC Adapter are plugged together into the netbook). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

zypper lr -d | grep Kernel 1 | Kernel:vanilla | Kernel:vanilla | Yes | Yes | 98 | rpm-md | http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Kernel:/vanilla/standard
It is different like it was on openSUSE 11.4 RC1 (first time filling this Bug), the issue appeared in all situations: 1. When using battery only 2. Using Both battery, and AC Adapter 3. Using AC Adapter only. So, is this bug RESOLVED (by) UPSTREAM ? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
