In both cases no matter which partitioner I tried (YAST Partitioner, cfdisk, fdisk) the partition table was not properly deleted/re-initialised. The only thing that helped was letting dd run for half a minute or so writing zeroes to the first few MB's of the USB stick. Maybe the x86_64 KDE image is writing the partition table in a slightly wrong way, perhaps in slightly the wrong area or with some offset not set right? IMHO this is a serious bug, even if it doesn't occur in all cases, since it forces ordinary users to run an incredibly dangerous dd command to get back usage of their USB stick after using it to install Opensuse. Try explaining to someone who's not experienced with Linux how they should carefully find out which /dev/sdX device their USB stick is, otherwise the command could destroy everything on their computer! Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Write Opensuse 12.1 KDE LiveCD x86_64 image to a USB stick using Suse Studio Imagewriter 2.Boot or install a machine using the USB stick, just to verify that it was all written properly and works 3.Once finished try deleting all the partitions using YAST Partitioner and using the 'expert' option to create a new partition table. Actual Results: YAST throws up some errors during the process of wiping the partition table. After physically removing and re-inserting the stick (even if re-inserting into a different machine entirely) KDE still shows partitions on the stick named 'Opensuse live KDE' (whatever it's called) partition plus another one. However all partitioning programs tried (YAST Partitioner, cfdisk, fdisk) show no partitions present. Further, if you then go on to create a new partition on the stick with any partitioning program, and format it, this new partition will never be visible when inserting the stick into a computer, not even on Windows 7. The tool parted reports an error in that case ("Invalid partition table - recursive partition on /dev/sdx"). YaST informs the user about this error. When the user wants to create a new partition table on the disk with YaST for some reason YaST first tries to delete the partition with parted and this fails. It seems like a bug that YaST tries to delete the partition since creating a new partition table deletes it anyway. But ignoring the error and continuing a new partition table is created with parted and from then on everything looks fine. Creating a new partition table with fdisk also works so I cannot reproduce the need to use dd. As I said in comment #3 after removing the USB stick and putting it back in the "openSUSE Live CD KDE" partition is still there. I also tried this with cfdisk and fdisk and got the same results. I'm pretty sure I tried with parted too. Anyway isn't the fix for this to have the ISO image/imagewriter create a valid partition table? By the way by today it's also possible to just store a standard live iso (not hybrid) on the stick as a file on e.g a fat filesystem and install the grub2 bootloader in a way that it boots the iso directly.
