[Bug 207626] New: kbiff invalid login
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=207626 Summary: kbiff invalid login Product: SUSE Linux 10.1 Version: Final Platform: i586 OS/Version: SuSE Linux 10.1 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: r.ems@gmx.net QAContact: kde-maintainers@suse.de Hi all! kbiff on SuSE 10.1 doesn't work as it did on 10.0. Checking a pop3 mailbox throws: -------------------------------------------------- Invalid login to xxx I was not able to login to the remote server. This means that either the server is down or you have entered an incorrect username or password. Please make sure that you have entered the correct settings. -------------------------------------------------- The pop3 mail server logs: (username and hostname changed) Sep 22 12:39:25 foo1 popper[28250]: apop "bar" [pop_apop.c:214] Sep 22 12:39:25 foo1 popper[28250]: bar at foo2 (1.2.3.4): -ERR [AUTH] not authenticated [pop_apop.c:329] Username and Password are ok. Removing kbiff-3.8-16 from 10.1 and installing kbiff-3.7.1 from 10.0 solves the problem and everything works as expected. From your successful popper log:
Oct 6 16:41:23 anaconda popper[27609]: Received (8): "USER ems" [pop_get_command.c:105] .. Oct 6 16:41:23 anaconda popper[27609]: Received: "pass xxxxxxxxx" [pop_get_command.c:96] which is classic POP from KBiff 3.7.1. The APOP in the unsuccessful log shows that KBiff 3.8.1 is trying to APOP, but then the server claims that 'ems' is not in the popauth database. Did you run 'popauth' on the mail server to tell it your apop password? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=207626 ------- Comment #8 from r.ems@gmx.net 2006-10-12 10:40 MST ------- No, I didn't run popauth on the mail server! I don't want to use APOP, I want to continue using POP as kbiff 3.7.1 did! Isn't this possible? If I set an APOP database for 60 users, then I will have to ask every user to set his/her password again, on a system where they can't login (BASH=/bin/false). And every client will have to be checked if it supports APOP and changed to use it. No, I (we) want to continue using kbiff and POP! 8) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

------- Comment #10 from wstephenson@novell.com 2006-10-13 05:18 MST -------
Looking at the code, KBiff 3.8.x always assumes the user wants to use APOP if
the server says it supports APOP (includes a timestamp in its banner greeting),
and fails if the server gives an -ERR after sending APOP.
I've hacked in a 'Disable APOP' option to the Advanced Setup dialog and will
ask the author Kurt Granroth
