[Bug 458897] New: downloads from download.opensuse. org redirector are so slow they are almost unusable
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=458897 Summary: downloads from download.opensuse.org redirector are so slow they are almost unusable Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: All OS/Version: All Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: YaST2 AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: iansamit@gmail.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: Other If I use the default download.opensuse.org redirector, I get download speeds at perhaps 2kB/s at best, and averaging at less than 1kB/s - also interrupted by frequent "time outs". Where I can select a mirror myself, download speed averages around 50kB/s. However, even knowing this now, I am still affected in three ways: 1. Mirror lists for some of the repositories (especially those from the Build Service are difficult to find. 2. I avoid "1-click install" because the links use the download.opensuse.org default. They also often subscribe me back to the default repositories, so I have two mirrors for the same repository. 3. I have to turn off my Internet connection when I install a new version of openSuse, for fear that I might accidentally hit a button that will connect to the internet, and lock up my system for hours with updates. I have searched the bug-list and have found several references to "fails" but not to slow speed. However, the problem seems to be quite common, and well-documented on forums. There are references to it at: http://forums.opensuse.org/general-chit-chat/395677-slow-opensuse-downloads.... http://news.opensuse.org/2008/09/23/upcoming-factory-changes/ http://osdir.com/ml/linux.distributions.smartpm.general/2006-11/msg00146.htm... and http://news.opensuse.org/2008/08/29/mirror-brain-and-new-lizard-in-china/ This was very nearly a show-stopper for me when I first started using openSuse. Fortunately, I had read about Smart, and when I installed that, complete with it's own mirror list, openSuse suddenly became a usable OS. After the improvements to Yast2 in 10.3, I started experimenting with the Software Managment again, but there seemed no improvement to speed until I tried setting my own mirror paths. Now I get good speed for most repositories, but just a trickle for those where I have been unable to find mirrors. For me, the problem is now partially solved, but I suspect many simply follow the advice on the website: "You don't need to select a mirror yourself. If you use download.opensuse.org ... it takes care of everything." At the very least, I would recommend changing the website until this problem is solved. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
