[Bug 640773] New: Xen kernel crashing right after grub
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=640773 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=640773#c0 Summary: Xen kernel crashing right after grub Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.3 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Xen AssignedTo: jdouglas@novell.com ReportedBy: angie@nameless-host.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=390689) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=390689) Snapshot of the booted machine User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.2.10) Gecko/20100914 SUSE/3.6.10-0.3.1 Firefox/3.6.10 The machine crashes whenever the xen kernel is chosen. This does not happen at all when using a desktop / default kernel, but happens with all xen-kernel versions available from the standard installation repositories. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Install Xen kernel (64 bit system) Versions tried: 2.6.34.7-0.2.2, 2.6.34.7-17.1 2.Try to boot 3. Actual Results: Grub is showing up, choose Xen kernel and see how the system crashes right after unpacking the image (as far as I can see it.) I was just wondering why it was working in the older OpenSUSE versions, that's it.
Perhaps because there was no xsave support in Xen yet back then.
By the way: xsave=0 did nothing when I limited the CPUID in BIOS, but still it is a quite weird behavior.
Sure - xsave functionality depends on CPUID leaf 0xd, and hence with CPUID leaves limited to the first three, the option doesn't matter.

Oh, that's the very recently released update.
Sorry to bother you with this,
If you could nevertheless please provide the information requested? We'd like to get this fixed for real, not by having to direct people to use command line options. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

By the way: the CPU flags have changed in /proc/cpuinfo after I deactivated the BIOS option... seem to be fewer than before.
Of course. That's the "purpose" of the BIOS option.
I will now try to get a better screen shot since the camera resolution of my mobile is not the very best .... and the system reboots quite fast. :)
Just add "noreboot" to the Xen command line. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

(XEN) xsave_init: cpu0: cntxt_max_size: 0x0 and states: 2cb4304e:05b0b101
is showing that the CPUID output for this leaf is completely bogus. Could you attach a native kernel's /var/log/boot.msg, please? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

From looking at the numbers I would guess that what we're seeing is output of leaf 2 (cache descriptors).
