[Bug 417289] New: Screen updates very slow in KDE3 using Xgl
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=417289 Summary: Screen updates very slow in KDE3 using Xgl Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: x86 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE3 AssignedTo: kde-maintainers@suse.de ReportedBy: w.v.velzen@sercom.nl QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Community User After last weeks (2008-W32) updates my default desktop became very slow. A Midnight Commander window in konsole for instance would build up pixel by pixel. Switching to KDE4 made the specific Midnight Commander problem disappear, but screen updates still seem slower than they should be. Draging around a window is "ugly": you see lots of "echo's" of the window in previous positions. Also switching from Xgl to Xorg as DISPLAYMANAGER_XSERVER, under KDE3 has the same effect as above. My graphics chipset is Intel 945G. And yes, I installed both the update and the fix for Intel ... when they were released last week. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Btw: I said last week, not this week!
Hmm. You updated in this week 1375 packages (complete system upgrade?). This makes it not really easy to figure out which update broke it. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Most of them were installed during or right after updating the machine from 10.3 to 11.0. But it wasn't until the updates on Friday that I noticed the slow down. That should narrow down the search a bit. Ok.

Smells like xorg-x11-driver-video-7.3-138.5.i586.rpm, which supposed to bring reasonable performance back. Feel free to use to use
Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
in 'Section "Devices"' of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf, which was our temporary default for about 2 weeks (until we need to give up finally and went back to XAA), but I'm afraid it won't help.
There is nog Section "Devices" in my xorg.conf. So I assumed you meant Section "Device". But when I added it there (like below), X wouldn't start anymore. Section "Device" BoardName "945G" BusID "0:2:0" Driver "intel" Identifier "Device[0]" Screen 0 VendorName "Intel" AccelMethod "EXA" EndSection /var/log/SaX.log says: 15-Aug 08:57:05 <I> Checksum of installed configuration is invalid ! Parse error on line 138 of section Device in file /etc/X11/xorg.conf "AccelMethod" is not a valid keyword in this section. Problem when parsing config file ISaX: could not import file: /etc/X11/xorg.conf at /usr/sbin/isax line 171. /var/log/messages says: Aug 15 09:01:47 armdevnux0 kdm[2496]: XDMCP socket creation failed, errno 97 Aug 15 09:01:48 armdevnux0 kdm[2496]: X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly Aug 15 09:01:48 armdevnux0 kdm[2496]: Unable to fire up local display :0; disabling. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
Yes, 'Section "Device". You forgot 'Option' in front of 'AccelMethod'.
Right, probably was confused by the quotes and the two arguments to the "Option" option. ;) But indeed, this fixes the specific problem with the very slow build up of the Midnight Commander screen in a konsole window under Xgl. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
