[Bug 691111] New: defaultdomain tinkering causes erratic hostname behavior
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=691111 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=691111#c0 Summary: defaultdomain tinkering causes erratic hostname behavior Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Final Platform: All OS/Version: Linux Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: jengelh@medozas.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Beta-Customer Blocker: --- Initial setup: 1. Have DNS entries for s1.subsidiary.com and s1.company.com 2. Set /etc/HOSTNAME to "s1.subsidiary.com" 2. In /etc/sysconfig/network/config, NETCONFIG_DNS_STATIC_SEARCHLIST is set to "subsidiary.com company.com". 4. Run netconfig update so it propagates to /etc/resolv.conf. To reproduce the bug: 5. Set /etc/HOSTNAME to "s1.company.com" to simulate absorbance into the host company. 6. Reboot the system 7. Running `hostname --fqdn` will still produce "s1.subsidiary.com", causing havoc in all sorts of services that already expect the new hostname. Of this mention is ISC dhcpd, which uses the FQDN to search for its configuration in LDAP. Cause: /etc/init.d/boot.localnet sets the full hostname as read from /etc/HOSTNAME, and then sets the dnsdomainname. But because the dnsdomainname is empty, the hostname known to the kernel (sysctl -a | grep host) will become just "s1" without any domain part. As a result, hostname --fqdn will do a DNS lookup, which follows the search order. The domainname however is also nuked for some reason even if /etc/defaultdomain contains "company.com". That is, in either case, the kernel hostname is just s1. Suggested fix: Nuke the dnsdomain stuff and make sure that when boot.localnet is done that whatever is in HOSTNAME matches the kernel's idea of hostname. This is how it is done with systemd-on-openSUSE (AFAICS) or Fedora (sysvinit or systemd). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
