There they appear by default at the left side of the screen where they are partly hidden by my vertical panel. So I try to move the somewhat to the right. But this isn’t possible, as soon as one clicks on them with the mouse and tries to drag them, they perform some action: the digital clock pops up a calendar and the “show desktop” widget shows the desktop.² ---- ¹ The “show desktop” widget uses too much space in a vertical panel, see bug #379759. Some areas look definitely like the frame and not the icon but behave like the icon.
