[Bug 222110] New: grub crashes with default proposal & dmraid
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=222110 Summary: grub crashes with default proposal & dmraid Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Beta 2 plus Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Blocker Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: duwe@novell.com ReportedBy: hare@novell.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com CC: aj@novell.com, stefan.fent@novell.com When installing on dmraid, YaST2 creates this proposal for the standard installation: dmraid-1 * 1 7179 f extended dmraid-5 1 9 83 linux-boot dmraid-6 10 204 82 swap dmraid-7 205 2815 83 linux-root dmraid-8 2816 7179 83 linux-home Calling grub and typing: root (hd0,4) results in a floating point exception from grub. So grub cannot be installed. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=222110 duwe@novell.com changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- AssignedTo|duwe@novell.com |mkoenig@novell.com ------- Comment #1 from duwe@novell.com 2006-11-17 07:19 MST ------- As we found out, grub queries the device about its geometry. This is generally a good idea for boot disks. dm-raids however can only report a geometry if they were given one. As grub might actually use the C/H/S addresses computed from the geometry in question, it should be correct, so making up a fake one is a bad idea. The proper geometry, as used by the BIOS, might reside in the on-disk information or might be queried via EDD. When dmraid assembles its devices, it should set these values in the device driver. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=222110 ------- Comment #2 from mkoenig@novell.com 2006-11-21 03:10 MST ------- We cannot use the on-disk metadata. I only found one format which has CHS information defined in its data structure. Submitted a patch which reads the geometry via EDD, but only the first device. If EDD is not accessible we use a default value. This will need some testing. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

(Configuration works meanwhile correctly) So I assume this is a device-mapper problem. Reassigning. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=222110 ------- Comment #5 from aj@novell.com 2006-11-26 04:10 MST ------- is this fixed now? https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=222110 aj@novell.com changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Severity|Blocker |Critical ------- Comment #7 from aj@novell.com 2006-11-26 22:39 MST ------- This is working now on other machines and just fails on this machine which is somehow unusual and might have a BIOS problem. I downgrade this to CRITICAL. If we can figure out why this machine fails, it would be fine - but since the other work, it's not a BLOCKER with the analysis done. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=222110 ------- Comment #8 from mkoenig@novell.com 2006-11-29 04:19 MST ------- I found that grub can be installed on the machine in comment #6. dmraid is working fine when booting from CD and testing in rescue environment. However there are still problems when booting the machine. grub stage1 starts, then there is a delay and grub needs several minutes to go through stage1.5 and 2. Finally the kernel boots, however the dmraid setup fails. After this the Raid seems to be broken (BIOS setup says status degraded). I have no clue what is happening here, the problem seems to be either in the BIOS or grub. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=222110 mkoenig@novell.com changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|NEW |RESOLVED Resolution| |FIXED ------- Comment #9 from mkoenig@novell.com 2006-12-04 10:29 MST ------- Fixed. The only machine not working is the one from comment #6, which seems to be broken. Every other tested machine works fine. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=222110 ------- Comment #10 from seuchato@yahoo.de 2007-01-10 15:18 MST ------- I use ia86 32 bit dvd on a box where i previously installed 10.1 frm c't dvd successfully. I try to install on soft raid md0, but that fails. I get a " no os installed to boot from" message. When I look at the mbr's on grub does not seem to be there. So if this is fixed, it is not on the dvd I downloaded a couple of days ago. On the 10.1 install I used reiserfs, while I initially used ext3 on the 10.2. I tried again 10.1 with ext3 to upgrade it later on and it fails too! Encouraged by this post: http://www.suseforums.net/lofiversion/index.php/t29139.html I tried reiserfs with 10.2 and that works. So my guess is: this is not yet totally resolved. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=222110 ------- Comment #12 from aosthof@novell.com 2007-01-11 01:56 MST ------- In reply to comment #10: If I understand you correctly, you try to install on a mdraid (md0), not dmraid, which this bug is about. So, this bug is fixed concerning it's topic - dmraid. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
