[Bug 442612] New: ramdisk_size on boot on live cd's.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=442612 Summary: ramdisk_size on boot on live cd's. Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Beta4 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: Live Medium AssignedTo: coolo@novell.com ReportedBy: doiggl@velocitynet.com.au QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Hello, With the live-cds, can the boot process in future medium be setup so kiwi boots with a disk size of 50% of available ram OR 512mb [whichever is greater]. e.g - on a machine with 4GB ram installed use/boot 2GB for its file system - on a machine with 2GB ram installed use/boot 1GB for its file system [the ones above calculates 50% available memory calculates that and picks the larger value instead of 512mb] - on a machine with 1GB ram installed use/boot 512mb for its file system - on a machine with 768 ram installed use/boot 512mb for its file system [picks 512mb option because its larger than 768 *0.5] - I ask because I install some rpm's and updates, and run out of room to install them. Also its an easier option to use than typing in options at startup. The running out of room has happened to other people too https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=412457#c4 Other info https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=412457 Thankyou -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I'm wondering what the problem is I seem to run out of room installing various rpms, some are just updates, others are new applications in rpm format.
Does the tmpfs mount not use up to half of your physical RAM ?. I have 2GB ram total, I do not know on how to check how much tmpfs mount uses I do not see it in the list below.
check the mount list after you have booted the liveCD linux@linux:~> su - linux:~ # mount /proc on /proc type proc (rw) sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw) debugfs on /sys/kernel/debug type debugfs (rw) udev on /dev type tmpfs (rw) devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,mode=0620,gid=5) none on /proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc type binfmt_misc (rw)

Question: Can I allocate more than 50% of ram to disk (eg 80%) if so, how ? That should give me a 1600mb (to install rpms)| 400mb (memory allowance) split.
I fixed the union mount to let you access the /read-write directory. After that change you can change the tmpfs size on the fly, yes It will work like this: mount -o remount,size=... /read-write will be fixed in the next kiwi submission. live systems will be available with RC1. I'm going to close this when I submit a fixed kiwi package Thanks -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
