What kind of package is boinc? I can't find it...
boinc is (In reply to comment #4)
boinc-client not BOINC.
Ok, that helps.
Actually boinc-client IS part of BOINC. It is the backend processing daemon. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

AFAIK it got imported to openSUSE:12.1:Update 10 days ago. I can not agree. I tested both, fresh and update with no problems here. Please tell me what you are doing and what does not work exactly.
I installed via the regular repositories. I went into the run-level thing and told it to always start boinc-client. I rebooted. I started boinc manager and it cannot find localhost even though run level services says the client is running. I don't have any current projects or anything. I am unable to add any projects because the manager cannot connect to the client. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

can you please try to connect via 127.0.0.1 ?
absolutely nothing works. I can enter the above ip address or localhost as the selected computer without a password (is there a necessary password? I was never asked to assign one.) When I was using Ubuntu, you simply installed BOINC and it took care of everything. There is an amazing amount of back door setup required for this. It's rather "expert friendly". -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Have a look into /var/lib/boinc/gui_rpc_auth.cfg. There you can find the password that "should" be used for boinc-gui aka boinc-manager. If you aren't satisfied with this password, just define your own one.
If I use 127.0.0.1 it fails right away. If I use "localhost" lassie never comes home. Will try changing the password in that file and rebooting in a bit, but I don't expect different results. I'm beginning to think I need to manually create the config file with all entries filled in before it will ever work. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Hi,
I think you should start from a "clean" starting point.
1) stop boinc-client (rcboinc-client stop) 2) remove all files inside /var/lib/boinc/ (rm -rf /var/lib/boinc/*) 3) start your boinc-client (rcboinc-client start) 4) set your connection password in /var/lib/boinc/gui_rpc_auth.cfg to whatever you want 5) start boinc-manager 6) for connection use 127.0.0.1 as host and the password you defined in "gui_rpc_auth.cfg" 7) add your project :)
This is the way I did it. except step 1 and 2. I started with step 3 ;)
I just built this machine a couple of weeks ago. I did not copy over my home directory and it never had BOINC installed on it. I did finally get it to work after changing password and once again forcing the client to start in settings before connecting via the manager. This certainly doesn't work as cleanly as it does/did in Ubuntu or even Fedora, but at least it is now working. I was feeling very guilty about the "spare" CPU power this quad core has and all of those cancer cure projects looking for computing time. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
