[Bug 925944] New: Running "gdm" (from Gnome 3.16), cannot switch virtual consoles
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=925944 Bug ID: 925944 Summary: Running "gdm" (from Gnome 3.16), cannot switch virtual consoles Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Factory Version: 201503* Hardware: x86-64 OS: SUSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: GNOME Assignee: bnc-team-gnome@forge.provo.novell.com Reporter: nrickert@ameritech.net QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:36.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/36.0 Build Identifier: This is with Tumbleweed 20150330. Attempting to switch virtual terminals (CTRL-ALT-F2 for example) either does nothing or locks up the session. This happens on two different machines, both with Intel graphics. Reproducible: Always -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

From a second computer, I opened two ssh connections to the test machine. In one of those, I ran "top". In the other, I ran a root shell.
At the gdm login screen, I used CTRL-ALT-F3. The mouse pointer dissappeared and "gdm" stopped responding to keyboard entries, but the screen did not otherwise change. In particular, there was no switch to a virtual console. Checking from the other computer, I saw that the load average had shot up to 2.03 on the top session. I could not see any high cpu use process, but I'm not sure whether top itself was now crippled. On the root shell screen, I tried "shutdown -r now". I got a message about "polkit" shutting down, but nothing else happened. In particular, the system did not shutdown. I had to use a forced power-off to accomplish that. In response to #c3 -- yes, a switch to virtual console from within a KDM session is fine. I presume it is also fine from within a Gnome session. I am guessing (but did not test) that it fails within a Gnome-wayland session. I'm guessing that this is a Wayland problem. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Confirming that it works fine from within a Gnome session and confirming that it fails within a Gnome-wayland session. My guess too that it should be a Wayland problem, or graphic chip related maybe. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
