Hi Neil, please note that GDM 3.16 now assigns the first user to the first free
VT, likely VT2.
So maybe by Ctrl+Alt+F2 you are _actually_ "doing nothing".
On my laptop, switching to VT1, then VT3, then returning to the logged-in
graphical desktop on VT2 works.
GDM 3.16 has problems though, like autologin not working, or Ctrl+Alt+F7
showing the greeter but hanging the system.
Give it another try, then if you decide to change this bug or opening another
one, I will join in testing.
By the way, Intel graphics (GM965) in use here too.
