[Bug 332340] New: X server stops user session (similar to 120335)
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=332340 Summary: X server stops user session (similar to 120335) Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Final Platform: x86 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: sndirsch@novell.com ReportedBy: UweGalle@gmx.de QAContact: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: Community of Practice My case is similar to the case https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=120335 what was fixed in X.Org 6.9 but reapperas in openSUSE 10.3 and X.Org 7.2. When my X server starts the monitor goes black but does not fall into powersaving mode. My machine always responds to pings even after attempts to switch back to the text console with Ctrl+Alt+F1. But these attempts have no effect because the screen remains black. I have an IBM Netfinity Server 5500 M20 as described here: http://www.linux-tested.com/results/netfinity5500-20.html. I am using the on board graphics what worked during setup. The most annoying thing is that there is no way to configure the X server. SaX2 needs the X server so I can't use it. YaST does not invoke the video setup because it seems to use SaX2. xorgcfg and X -configure also need a running X server so they are useless. The stunning thing is that xorgcfg has the option -textmode obviously for such cases but xorgcfg is not compiled with this option. The option is described in the man pages but if it is invoked with xorgcfg -textmode it shows only the available options without -textmode. Please provide a version where -textmode is available in future. Then I followed the documentation. There is a chapter "The X Window-System" in the Novell reference manual. In the first subchapter "manual configuration" the file xorg.conf is described. The most important thing is what driver must be used but the documentation says here that the driver is determined by SaX2 what is again useless when manual configuration is required. Please explain how the correct video driver for a certain system is determined - both in the documentation and for me as soon as possible. The documentation says in the last subchapter what further information is provided by installing documentation packages. Until now I didn't use such documentation packages so add a little description how to use this documentation. Is this a set of man pages? Or does it belong to the info system? Is there a special program necessary to read this documentation? Are there simple text files and in what directories? Please note that I don't have a running X server so don't provide means what need it. Please provide this information both in the documentation and for me as soon as possible. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Looks like this is missing in logfile. :-( X: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/xorg/modules//drivers/s3_drv.so: undefined symbol: RamDacInit
Could you give some details, please? Why this is missing in my logfile? Is it a configuration problem? The undefined symbol seems to be a driver problem. Is there any workaround? Is it impossible to use this driver at all? Is it possible to use a standard driver like a frambuffer device? Could I work with my computer if I switch to XFree86? Does this implementation use different drivers or do I have to expect to get the same error? Please give me at least a link to an information source what helps me to find answers to these questions. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

released
Does this mean that the fixed driver is available now? I downloaded all mandatory patches today on 5.35 PM german time but I again got a black screen. I started SaX2 from textmode and saved the configuration. Afterwards xorg.conf contained the driver s3 in the device section. After a restart I saw again the black screen as the X server started. Then I started SaX2 -r -m 0=vesa again as originally suggested by Stefan. Now my xorg.conf again contains the driver vesa and I can start the X server at least. Note that I also have a problem with the refresh rate of my monitor as reported in https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=335850&GoAheadAndLogIn=1. According to Steffen Winterfeldt this problem is mainly caused by the graphics card bios. But I think that it is not excluded that the driver is involved here and that all would work fine if the correct driver could be loaded. That's why the correct driver should work. I attach xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

What's the output of ' rpm --changelog -q xorg-x11-server '? Add the first lines.
* Mon Oct 15 2007 - sndirsch@suse.de - bug-331609_prefer-user-specified-displaysize.diff * Some quirks for some broken monitors (Bug #331609) * Wed Oct 10 2007 - sndirsch@suse.de - missing-ramdac-symbols.diff * Make sure that the ramdac symbols are present in the server. The former ramdac module is now built into the server, so its symbols need to be explicitly exported to drivers. At least s3 and glint drivers are affected. (Bug #332340, Debian #423129). * Wed Oct 03 2007 - sndirsch@suse.de - xserver-1.3.0-xkb-and-loathing.patch * Ignore (not just block) SIGALRM around calls to Popen()/Pclose(). Fixes a hang in openoffice when opening menus. So you already have the fixed xorg-x11-server RPM installed. If you get a blank screen now, this is a different issue.
Do you think that I should post a new bug report or should we continue here? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
