[Bug 339006] New: Suspend to disk on Dell Inspiron 9400 fails while s2ram with no options works
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=339006 Summary: Suspend to disk on Dell Inspiron 9400 fails while s2ram with no options works Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: vkrevs@yahoo.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Created an attachment (id=181954) --> (https://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=181954) /var/log/pm-suspend.log after a successful resume Suspend to disk worked perfectly on my Dell Inspiron 9400 with openSUSE 10.2 for x86_64. After upgrade to openSUSE 10.3 for x86_64, when I select "Suspend to disk" from the kpowersave applet, the KDE screensaver starts and the screen is locked with the username/password prompt. s2ram works without any options when started as root. s2ram -n says that the machine is recognized by s2ram. I've looked at various howtos on the openSUSE wiki, and managed to get the system to suspend to disk by setting SUSPEND2RAM_FORCE="yes" in /etc/powersave/sleep and by creating a new file, /etc/pm/config.d/config containing HIBERNATE_METHOD="kernel". -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Suspend to disk worked perfectly on my Dell Inspiron 9400 with openSUSE 10.2 for x86_64. After upgrade to openSUSE 10.3 for x86_64, when I select "Suspend to disk" from the kpowersave applet, the KDE screensaver starts and the screen is locked with the username/password prompt.
What happens afterwards?
s2ram works without any options when started as root. s2ram -n says that the machine is recognized by s2ram.
I'm a little bit confused. HIBERNATE_METHOD is only for suspend to disk. So is suspend to RAM working or not. Anyway, can we please handle only the suspend to disk issue here? Please create another bugreport for suspend to RAM. Thanks. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Nothing. The screen is locked, and that's it. If I enter my username and password, I'm back to the KDE session. If I don't enter my username and password, then nothing happens.
Suspend to RAM is working. I was just following the steps in http://en.opensuse.org/S2disk - one of the mentioned prerequisites for s2disk is working s2ram.
I should've probably made the bug report more clear. s2ram is working after the upgrade. s2disk does not work after the upgrade (neither from command line nor from kpowersave) unless
a) SUSPEND2RAM_FORCE="yes" is set in /etc/powersave/sleep, and
SUSPEND2RAM_FORCE has nothing to do with s2disk.
b) a new file, /etc/pm/config.d/config, is created by hand, containing HIBERNATE_METHOD="kernel".
Please remove this config option again and try the following: - start the system and add init=/bin/bash to the grub command line list - mount /proc - mount /sys - swapon -a - s2disk -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I'm having the same problem with my Dell Latitude D830 running openSUSE 10.3
Which "same problem"?
x86_64. s2ram works fine after adding S2RAM_OPTS="-f" to /etc/pm/config.d/config.
This is probably not working from the text console, there you will probably need "--force --vbe_post --vbe_mode".
Booting with init=/bin/bash as suggested in comment #5 also and suspending to disk also works fine.
How can fix this? What extra info do you need from me?
Please describe your problem more exact. I am not convinced that this is the same bug that the original bugreporter has seen. Do you have a resume= parameter in /proc/cmdline? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

You are right, it isn't the same bug. I think it was a bug in the binary nvidia driver. Upgrading to the latest driver (version 169.07) resolved my problem. Suspend to disk works fine now.
