[Bug 529046] New: GNOME CD: remove yast2-qt and yast2-qt-pkg
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=529046 Summary: GNOME CD: remove yast2-qt and yast2-qt-pkg Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Factory Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Live Medium AssignedTo: coolo@novell.com ReportedBy: vuntz@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Looking at the GNOME CD, I wonder why we have yast2-qt and yast2-qt-pkg there. I see no real reason for this, so I guess we can save some space by removing them. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Camaleon requests on bug 540025 that yast2-qt be re-introduced in the Gnome LiveCD. He was surprised to find the Qt UI wasn't available when he was testing his work as a translator, and, as an user, he further argues that the GTK software manager isn't as adequate as the Qt one.
Thanks, Ricardo. Yes, I was used to download the LiveCD (gnome based) and use it to test the translations and the whole environment. And YaST Qt interface was also available, I didn't realize it was recently removed from that media :-(
I try to make the case that the GTK software manager on M8 will be less intimidating to past Qt users, and that PackageKit is also available. However, the abrupt dropping of the Qt UI and its small size (shouldn't occupy more than 1Mb) could be good reasons to re-consider this move.
Please converse with him. He is on the CC list.
BTW, converse with "her" :-) But please, let's no take this as a conflict between kde/gnome or about as a possible "feature-lacking" of any YaST-GTK/Qt/ncurses based interface. The bug I openned wasn't for requesting any "feature" under YasT GTK interface, but requesting to have an option that was available (not so long ago) and is not there any more, that is, to be able to test YaST Qt interface in that media. I was not aware about the "space" concerning issue, but I think YaST (ncurses, gtk and qt) is a very important part of the whole distribution and should be, not only well-translated but also well-tested, so I'd expect the LiveCD media could (whenever possible) bundle all the available YaST interfaces. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Btw, interesting output at bug 540025, comment 6. I'd think the Factory RPM was the same as that shipped in M7 (or if a new yast2-qt version was packaged, how it'd break ABI with so much stuff).
Sorry, I think that was my fault O:-) After reading your last comment, I noted the error I was getting ("libQtCore.so.4 is needed by yast2-qt-2.18.7-1.4.i586"), and got it clear. I was using "x86_64" LiveCD BUT downloaded "i586.rpm" ones. So, after all, the only needed packages to have yast qt interface are in fact just 2 ("yast2-qt" and "yast2-qt-pkg") which are now properly installed on the LiveCD. But the original request about keeping these two "little" and "small" packages ;-) in Gnome LiveCD still remains, just to make things easier for the tester. And in fact, not so much space is needed to make room for them :-) -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Sorry, but the livecd's goal is not to provide a second tool for everything. If the gtk interface is not good enough, then please fix it (and from what I understand it's already on the way).
I always thought that LiveCD wewas for testing, among other uses. And please, don't go for the "usability or goodness" path. That is not the main issue of my requesting.
For testing installations, you need to install things - there is no way that one live cd will contain everything that can be tested.
I cannot always perform an install, so I use LiveCD, which are good enough for testing, not all, but *most* things. We are talking here about 1 MiB of space on the live media. I cannot see your point of removing an important package (as is the whole YaST Qt) by just arguing "we have to make some space in the LiveCD" >:-). -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
