[Bug 631680] New: OpenSUSE 11.3 KVM install of windows xp fails on first reboot during installation
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=631680 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=631680#c0 Summary: OpenSUSE 11.3 KVM install of windows xp fails on first reboot during installation Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: aburgemeister@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Novell Technical Services Services Priority: 300 Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=383311) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=383311) recordmydesktop output of the symptom. Dell Latitude D630 OpenSUSE 11.3 x86_64 virt-manager-0.8.4-4.3.x86_64 kvm-0.12.3-2.9 virt-utils-1.1.2-1.7 In an attempt to create a windows xp virtual machine within KVM via virt-manager the installation starts properly and gets through the point where it performs its first reboot (entering into an old graphical screen instead of the ancient text-based screen where hardware drivers and basic partitioning can be done). At this point virt-manager throws an error stating that a boot loader could not be found and lets you know the installation may have failed. Expected Results: At this point virt-manager should let the VM start and boot normally to continue the installation. Actual Results: virt-manager fails to let things continue. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Is there a reason I should need to start virt-manager as root rather than connecting to the system and getting prompted for root's credentials? I'm sure XP can work in this setup since I know people who have done it, but all of them create via the Command Line or some other utility.
I have made a fix for this specific issue and am able to install XP when starting the tools as a normal user. I am concerned that are likely other areas that will not work due to permission problems unless you are logged in as root (see also bug 574603). I think as a best practice for this release we should recommend users be logged in as 'root' when creating guests. In 4 to 6 weeks a maintenance release will come out with this fix. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Charles, can you confirm this fix was put into OpenSUSE? Looking through the changelog of vm-install I am definitely not seeing anything about this. I'm also not seeing the notes in this bug that I'm used to when a built is pushed out.
I regret to say the patch did not get checked in for the release and I'm not sure why. I have pulled it into our local repositories for all versions (11.3, 11.4 and SLE11SP1) and updated the change log files so that it won't get missed again. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
