[Bug 278679] New: Need to re-evauate min system requirements in printed materia on page 3 1.1 Hardwarerequirements
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=278679 Summary: Need to re-evauate min system requirements in printed materia on page 3 1.1 Hardwarerequirements Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: i386 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Usability AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: scocoo@tpg.com.au QAContact: siegfried.olschner@novell.com I started an insllation on at P3 1.0 Ghz total of 384 GIG of physical RAM well within the suggested minimum standards currently defined. Due to insufficient memory the GUI installation was not possible so went through the laborious tasks of using the text based install. By the time I had reached the commit installation I have already used up 12 man hours as I needed to remove the windows partition, create a / partition and /home partition and a swap file of aprox 580GB. The installation of duisk 1, 3 and 6 took in access of 24 hours after acceptance. Upon finish of installation. It is clear that even a P3 with just over the stated Physical memory where installaton has to be done via text to be completely unacceptable. Not there was NO issue in a GUI installation of MS Windows 2000. We need to re-evaluate our minimum physical memory to 512GB where thee is no integrated graphics card and stipulate min memory on video card. If someone with an older system was to believe their old P2 with 512 GIG RAM without a independent graphics card of x MB - I double with the GUI installation would finish below 16 hours in which the new user is likely to toss it out and retain Windows 2000 which loads in a matter of hours with full GUI installation facilities. We need to d some serious testing of the current range of P1-4 with 256IG of RAM and HDD space and start stipulating Video Card (seperate not shared) resources far more clearly. GUI has loaded on the test PC, however it is basically useless because of the time delay in actioning GUI interface commands. NO other errors were encountered during installation - but we need to physically test our claims on restricted performance PC's before we loose a lof business. Windows 2000 is actually usable in the above - I cannot see with our more advanced GUI why we cannot surpass this. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=278679 ------- Comment #1 from alpha096@tpg.com.au 2007-05-29 17:56 MST ------- With the same P3 and same physical RAM I have added an AGP 128Meg Video Card. I will advise outcome - The opensuse splash screen displayed after "Installation from 1st menu has been running for 2:30 already. I will advise outcome for consideration further -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=278679 ------- Comment #2 from alpha096@tpg.com.au 2007-05-29 20:44 MST ------- ....Further to comment #1... The Text based install program fails to actually complete a normal installation. The final part of the text installation saves and cleans up. It fails to define users, a root password, an update source and as such leaves the installed system inaccessible. As it does not define a user nor permit assignment of a root password the resultant installation via text is not usable. Even a subsequent login as root with nil password fails. Root seems to have been assigned a password without intervention. Please indicate if you wish me to open a separate bug "text installation fails...." -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=278679 ------- Comment #3 from alpha096@tpg.com.au 2007-05-31 02:44 MST ------- The same Hardware configuration was used with with exception of adding an AGP 128 Meg Video car what has provided a GUI interface. After selecting language and Next on the GUI the install process has not moved for over 24 hour. Conclusion: Min Physical RAM should by512MB with 1GIG desirable. A CPU either a celeron 2.x GHz or above such as a P4. A video card non integrated with system shared RAM of 128MB - AGP/PCIE Hard Disk 10GB min. We need to closely look at this, as I can install MS Windows 200 with only minor delays in installation - and functionally it performs well. I do not know at what time we started to gobble up resources that MS Windows 200 can easily use, but suse cannot. Much investigation needs to be made on current memory and cpu demands of the current package if we are to compete offering an advantage to users that they don't need hight power PC for open suse - a clam in we cannot allude to and a very necessary update to printed material in the manual 1.1 Hardware Requirements. Ends my trial - open for discussion amounts open suse QA. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=278679 snwint@novell.com changed: What |Removed |Added ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Status|NEW |RESOLVED Resolution| |FIXED ------- Comment #4 from snwint@novell.com 2007-06-12 08:09 MST ------- While SL 10.2 was a bit bad when it came to memory requirements, I didn't have problems installing on a 256 MB machine. The good news, however, is that 10.3 seems to need less memory and installation is possible with less than 200 MB again (heard about 128 MB, but didn't verify yet). Scott, if you have had other problems with the text based install, please make separate bugreports about them (one per bug, not everything into one report - see http://en.opensuse.org/Bugs#Reporting_a_Bug). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=278679 ------- Comment #5 from alpha096@tpg.com.au 2007-06-12 20:35 MST ------- Thank you Yes I understand the issue re text installation requiring new bug issue - however the process which takes up to 8 days to complete on above configured PC is too difficult to reproduce due enormous amounts of time re-quired to re-produce and bug report accurately. Rightly or wrongly I have elected not to reproduce a text install based upon the install programs decision to force a text only install. I am very very happy that progress with 10.3 is able to utilise less memory than 10.2. This is an excellent example where progress has not been achieved in further demands for resources. Traditionally, improvement always comes at the expense of resources and I am very very glad that improvement - just in the install program - has not come at the expense of further demands of resources. The excuse that improvements always comes at the expense of further resources is not valid and you have shows this to be true and achievable. Happy with close of bug in light of 10.3 install application.
