(Y/n) Entering 'Y' succeeds, and boot resumes successfully. These are the disk IDs reported by YaST-> System-> Partitioner: Device ID 1: scsi-SATA_WDC_WD1600BEVT-_WD-WXE508NK0617 Device ID 2: ata-WDC_WD1600BEVT-75ZCT1_WD-WXE508NK0617 This is the original entry used in /boot/grub/device.map: (hd0) /dev/disk/by-id/scsi-1ATA_WDC_WD1600BEVT-75ZCT1_WD-WXE508NK0617 This is used in the /boot/grub/menu.lst stanzas: /dev/disk/by-id/scsi-1ATA_WDC_WD1600BEVT-75ZCT1_WD-WXE508NK0617-part7 These entries make the boot error go away: a. for /boot/grub/device.map: (hd0) /dev/disk/by-id/scsi-SATA_WDC_WD1600BEVT-_WD-WXE508NK0617 b. for /boot/grub/menu.lst (when specifying drives): /dev/disk/by-id/scsi-SATA_WDC_WD1600BEVT-_WD-WXE508NK0617-part7 ie, just substituting entries in /boot/grub/device.map and /boot/grub/menu.lst with Device ID 1 from YaST. Notice the differences: a. 'SATA' instead of '1ATA', and b. '75ZCT1' was in the middle of the original entry. This would prevent such failures based on the libata-SCSI-command-emulation. The current picture according to kernel device names has changed recently, according to Tejun's plan to move libata out of SCSI, while the device names will stay as /dev/sd*. But as there will be no SCSI envolved anymore, the the "native" representation for libata devices would be the ata-* links. There will likely be a compat solution for libata SCSI enquiries, but it might be good not to depend on these values. If the vendor of the disk is "ATA", Yast should select the /dev/disk/by-id/ata-* links instead of the scsi-* links. Relying on a specific scsi_id config for ATA disks, which will eventually even move out of SCSI in the future, seems fragile, and the ATA links should be more reliable for ATA disks. This bug would not have happened with the "native" ata-* links. Also the strings are not truncated. Yeah, the picture has changed in the last 1.5 years. With the plan to move libata in the kernel out of the SCSI stack, we will have native "ata" devices again. The kernel device names will stay as /dev/sd*, but all the other stuff will look different. Until now you can tell from the name which subsystem created a block device (sd, hd), that will not be possible in the future. Running scsi_id on native ata devices will not make much sense.
