Belkin wireless ADSL router. No WEP or WPA, just open - access restriction is
by MAC address. (Yes, the laptop MAC is allowed and works.)
Even when I can't connect, KNetworkManager shows the fact that wlan has a good
level of wireless strength. It "sees" the wireless, but it can't actually talk
to it.
I've been messing around with this quite a bit. Currently I've uninstalled the
iwlwifi stuff and am using ipw3945d and related packages, and I uninstalled
KNetworkManager and installed KInternet. It's been very frustrating. It
actually worked for a while (with a max donwload speed of around 200 KB/sec,
yuck), but, since rebooting, I haven't been able to get wifi working again.
With this latest configuration (ipw and kinternet), the WifFi bezel actually
lights up, kinternet can still see the wireless levels, and it even has the
interface configured as shown by ifconfig but without an actual IP address, but
I get no connectivity, just get network unreachable messages. After fiddling
some more, I've got wired connection (eth0) working again. It actually seems
like wireless will only work if I've already got wired working. It's bizarre.
To be honest, the whole networking experience outside of NetworkManager is
pretty painful. Selecting connections in KInternet basically has no effect,
even though boxes stay checked and confirmations pop up to tell me it's working
(yes, it's configured to allow this in YaST). I have to keep going into YaST
and messing around hopefully.
