--- Comment #3 from Timothy Butterworth 2014-02-26 05:37:18 UTC ---
The gzip filter simply allows tar to extract/decompress in one shot, but it
only works with A Tar Archive as it checks for compatibility before operation.
You can see here from the output:
timothy.m.butterworth@Asus-X200CA:~/Downloads> tar -xzvf
/linux-brprinter-installer-1.0.4-1.gz
*** tar: This does not look like a tar archive ***
Since it detects it is not a Tar Archive it does not perform any action and
instead performs another sanity check:
*** tar: Skipping to next header ***
Now it exists as it does not perform extract operations on non-Tar archives.
tar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors
I hope this explains it.
If the file is a Tape Archive TAR and is compressed with Gzip then it can
decompress and extract in one operation!
For files that are compressed with GunZip but are not TAR you have to use
either
`gzip -d "/Directory/filename" or the proper archive container format utility
if it supports built in GunZip decompression.
