What happens here:
- this BIOS provides generic ACPI backlight functions which we definitely
want
to use (or say make working) -> these are the ones which probably Vista
also
uses
- Still some proprietary Sony laptop ACPI device functions (probably used by
Windows XP, evlt. a sony driver there) are available there.
Not long ago it was introduced to check whether generic ACPI functions are
available and these are tried to used. If these are available laptop specific
ones have to be ignored.
There are rather weird implementations of the generic ACPI functions and Rui
has done a great job to gracefully make use of them. AFAIK there still was the
one or other cleanup introduced into .30 -> Adding Rui to be sure.
As a quick test, please try:
acpi_backlight=vendor
This should make sony-laptop serve brightness again. Does it work?
Please don't give up now! We want to have the generic ones work.
Therefore please attach acpidump output.
Rui should be able to tell whether it's worth to try .30 kernels or whether the
machine needs blacklisting to always use sony-laptop automatically, etc.
