The "losing all your work" risk is not really that bad. If you are afraid of
that, just set the autorecovery interval (Tools:Options:Load/Save:General:"Save
AutoRecovery information every") short enough for your taste, and then when
after a crash or shutdown you run OOo again, let it recover the documents it
offers to recover. (The shortest autorecovery interval offered is one minute.)
Were you aware of the autorecovery feature? Is it good enough for you?
Sure, it would be nice if the autorecovery interval was based on some metric of
amount of editing done instead of just time, but that is more of a nice-to-have
feature request than a bug. And yeah, I can guess that saving a whole copy of a
document on each autorecovery can make OOo sluggish if you are editing a large
document.
