To learn more about what usb_modeswitch does, visit
http://www.draisberghof.de/usb_modeswitch/
Some notes:
1. The Tcl script is only run if a suitable hardware (USB modem) is connected
at boot time
2. If such a hardware is found, the process forks and the starter script (sh)
returns immediately; in versions prior to 1.1.4 that fact is not obvious but
still working. The boot process is not held up in any way
3. The hardware switched by usb_modeswitch needs between 5 and 20 seconds to
reappear in the switched mode; only then it is usable. This is a matter of the
respective firmware
4. The installed Tcl package has around 1.1 MB on my system (tclsh and
library). I would not call that "heavy" ...
Regarding the driver binding function:
This is just an add-on, a convenience feature to help people enabling their
modems even if their ID is not supported by the "option" serial driver of their
kernel version. It will only become active if no other driver binds to the
switched device after a certain wait.
