This reminded me of another possible relevant fact. This configuration is xinerama, with cloned display. Can't turn it off, because the laptop has a broken backlight, so the main screen is not usable (I can see just enough to log myself in and out, if I try really hard, but that's about it).
This won't work with vesa driver, maybe with fbdev. Anyway, if this issue only happens within the acroread window it's likely no video driver issue. So forget about creating any vesa/fbdev driver configuration.
