Well, the man-page said something about openlog being optional and syslog
taking
an "OR" of facility and level values as first argument. Anyway, after an
additional sleep(0) right after the syslog, I now at least get to see the
syslog output on screen, however, there's still nothing of libusb in
/var/log/messages - looks like the kernel causes that hang, before syslog (or
the file system?) has a
chance to actually write the message? Which makes me wonder how useful those
printk's in the kernel code actually are ...
