The initial mode picking algorithm in randr1.2 (as shipped) is slightly broken.
It attempts to set a 96dpi mode.
To calculate the dpi it uses the height in pixel from each mode and the display
size derived from ddc. If no ddc is available it assumes a hight that a pixel
height of 768 is picked (fallback for pre-ddc monitors).
Since the 1152x768 mode is found first in the list it is picked.
Any height information used in the Xserver ddx is disregarded, therefore the
contradicting messages in the log file.
I'm very reluctant to make a quick fix. The config file has no notion of
outputs but only of screens. Those screens resemble more driver instances than
real screens however due to the old XFree86 ddx structure.
Closing as WONTFIX.
