OK, thats what I did:
1. init 3
2. remove from yast sources everything besides the official opensuse oss and
nooss repos, and the YUM repo.
3. Downgraded to KDE 3.5.5 (all installed packages which had "kde" in their
name)
4. Create a brand new local user
5. init 5
6. login as the new user
Now, the floppy icon was visible in "Computer" menu, and clicking on it, was
able to mount the floppy.
Also, there was a floppy icon in konqueror/services/storage media/ alongside my
mounted partitions. I was able to mount/umount the floppy from that icon (with
right-click).
7. Logout
8. Login as another domain user (which never logged in on that machine).
9. Tried the step 6 from my original post, and received the same error. I guess
this is because of the backslash in the directory or something. Anyway - the
mount did not succeed.
10. Logout
11. init 3
12. add the these channels: KDE:/Backports, KDE:/KDE3 and KDE:/Community
13. Updated all kde packages to ver 3.5.7
14. login as the local user from step 4.
15. Now everything is like it was before the downgrade, i.e. like my OP
16. logout and login with the "new" domain user - same as my OP
Now, looks like that something is broken in 3.5.7. But there is a problem in
3.5.5 as well (step 9).
I understand that 3.5.7 are not supported, but most probably (if this problem
persist) it will appear in 10.3. I do not know which ver. of kde is going to be
in there anyway.
If you decide not to deal with this, should I post the case in KDE bug database
as well. Or you are going to move it upstream?
