--- Comment #11 from Jörg Schiling 2010-06-10 09:58:23 UTC ---
Around May 2004, there was an in-compatibile Linux kernel
interface change.
Before, a program needed to be root to open the /dev/ entries
and could later give up root privileges but still send any SCSI
commands.
After that incompatible change was introduced, you may open
many devices withiout being root, but you later need to be
root in order to be able send all needed SCSI commands.
If there was a fine grained privilege control system on Suse
that would allow the commands cdrecord, readcd, cdda2wav and
rscsi to do their work without ever been root and if this system
cannot be deinstalled even from a Suse base system, we could
implement a root-less solution. I currently see no way to work
without root privileges.
