Hey .. I just had another thought.
If the performance problem is related to something doing something like
ls -l /home2
then you could avoid that by removing read permission from /home2 and
/home2/staff and /home2/student. i.e. "chmod go-r directoryname".
That would ensure no "ls -l" causes problems.
It might cause other problems, I don't know. But it could be worth the
experiment.
i.e. use the automounter to just mount /home2, and remove read access from
/home2 and all child directories down to (but not including) individual home
directories.
