I'm having a similar problem with an HP Pavilion zv6000 laptop which uses ATI
Xpress 200m (128MB) video. I installed 12.3 with KDE (release).
It does not matter how the monitor energy saver is set, it does the same thing.
I have it "off."
Some period of time after the display is locked, the log-in screen appears and
stays up. When I type the first one or two characters of the password trying
to log in or move the mouse, the screen goes black and stays that way for
several minutes. When the log-in screen finally comes back I can unlock the
session.
I hope this is an ATI problem. I have to wait to install 12.3 on my regular
laptop computer (which uses Nvidia) to make sure it won't do that on it. (I'm
running 12.1.)
