The HEAD kernels have very few patches and are very close to upstream. Most
patches in the 10.3 kernel are backports from later upstream versions. The days
were the SUSE kernel had lots of patches are over. That's only SLES since lots
of backports and some additional features like EVMS or LKCD are necessary, but
not openSUSE.
However, I didn't advice to replace the distribution kernel with the HEAD
kernel, just test the microcode updater. You can install the kernel RPM with
$ rpm -ivh kernel-default...rpm
RPM can handle installation of multiple versions of the same package. You just
have to check the default kernel in /boot/grub/menu.lst and after the test you
can remove it with
$ rpm -e kernel-default-version
again.
