--- Comment #6 from Andreas Nordal 2012-04-24 00:13:57 UTC ---
This update, as seen in Apper:
openSUSE-2012-235 - kernel: Update to fix various bugs and security issues
- a lot of BTRFS bugs were fixed
- a performance issue with transparent huge pages was fixed which could have
caused huge slowdowns when doing I/O over e.g. USB sticks.
…appears to be what I was waiting for. I now have
kernel-desktop-3.1.10-1.9.1.x86_64.
Using the web testcase, my computer was usable long after the swapping had
began. I dared let Konqueror run until it used >3GB memory, which was a new
record, yet I could still move the mouse pointer, and programs responded to
user input (with a ~1min delay). Which is a huge improvement over a tootally
locked up computer (practically speaking).
There were other updates that came simultaneously, but this was the only kernel
update among them. I would have noticed if I had a kernel update since when the
web testcase didn't work (because I am installing the Nvidia driver manually,
bug 743007). So it looks like the fix for bug 710133 was also the fix for this.
