To start with the last section. I entered a new (empty) Kingston SD6/4GB SDHC
memory card in the reader and tried to reboot. Same behaviour - freeze before
reaching the grub menu. Power off and on and booting went ok.
(In case you also mentioned another type of medium, reboot with a CD-ROM in the
multi Blu-ray/DVD/CD-drive works ok).
I also guess you meant /var/log/messages when you said syslog.
As follows is the first section after power off/on and booting with the SDHC
card entered. The second part is after releasing the card and next enter it
again in the drive:
